SSL certificates are meant to keep your website safe and trustworthy — but when they’re misconfigured, they can cause a world of problems. Recently, we had a real-world example with one of our clients where an expired SSL certificate was breaking access for site visitors, even though everything looked right on the surface.
Here’s what happened — and what you need to know to make sure it doesn’t happen to your business.
The website had a valid SSL certificate installed and active. But some users (on different networks or devices) were still seeing security warnings and browser messages that the certificate was expired or mismatched.
It turns out that the server was still serving an old, expired certificate in certain conditions — especially over IPv6 connections (a newer internet protocol that’s growing in use).
This came down to a server-side misconfiguration:
The valid SSL certificate was installed and working for most users (IPv4).
But the old certificate hadn’t been fully removed, and was still active on the IPv6 route.
As a result, the server delivered the wrong certificate to some users, depending on how they were connecting.
Even worse — it all seemed intermittent. Some users had no issues, while others couldn’t access the site at all.
After thorough testing with tools like SSL Labs, Why No Padlock, and cURL, we confirmed the mismatch. The fix involved:
✅ Removing outdated DNS records (specifically AAAA records for IPv6)
✅ Reassigning the correct SSL certificate to all server paths
✅ Restarting the server to flush out cached sessions
Once complete, the correct certificate was consistently served, and the browser errors vanished.
Even if your SSL certificate is valid, your server might still be sending out the wrong one. This can hurt your credibility, impact SEO, and turn away potential customers with browser warnings like “Your connection is not private.”
